HURRICANE KATRINA

Hurricane Katrina crashed ashore on Mississippi's Beautiful Gulf Coast August 29, 2005, right dead center over my head. Little did I, or anyone else, expect Katrina to go down in History as the worst Natural Disaster to ever strike North America? Katrina hit with such powerful, mighty and devastating force it totally destroyed Mississippi's Gulf Coast reaching several miles inland.

The day after Katrina the City of Waveland, where I live, had only 35 inhabitable homes remaining. Ansley, Clermont Harbor, Lakeshore, Pearlington and other communities, were totally destroyed, thousands upon thousands of people instantly left homeless, including myself. Even today, over three years later, many streets in Waveland remain completely void of homes, businesses and people. No City Hall, no Post Office, no Supermarket, not much of anything, except TRASH, we do have TRASH, millions and millions of tons of valuable TRASH.

Waveland is currently home to about 1/2 its previous population, residents now occupy tiny, cramped, uncomfortable FEMA trailers, 216 square feet of space per family, others live in small tents. Schools, churches and businesses have all been forced into makeshift tents or trailers, but life goes on as best as it can.
