Wells at the Barents Sea's Snøhvit field were opened on 21 August and gas flowed into the Melkøya plant.
As part of the start-up phase and until the plant is cooled down and readied for the production of liquefied natural gas, they have to burn off gas from the flare.
Unfavourable wind directions led to a layer of soot descending over the town.
