NORTHERN WHEATEAR on its breeding grounds

Northern Wheatear – Oenanthe oenanthe – Traquet motteux

These birds were nesting in the Bardenas Reales de Navarra, along the road.
The Northern Wheatear is a migratory species which winters in Africa.
They frequent open stony areas with some grasses.
The nest is built with plant matter in rock-cavity or crevice, rodent’s burrows, holes in walls or well sheltered under stones.
These pictures show some birds singing from exposed perches near the ground.
Some burrows’ entrances are visible, probably with nests inside.
We did not see any aggressivity between them. They were singing and hunting on the ground.
