I just found this spectacular spider web in my backyard in SW France, at ground level, among grasses and dead leaves.
We can see the circular entrance of the labyrinth of tunnels. The spider (18 mm long) waits for preys down the tubular construction, and rushes out to catch the insect entangled on the large web.
The egg sac is hidden in the middle of the thick web.
This elaborated web gives the spider its name.

This species is again in my garden this year, but this time, the web is higher, at about one metre above the ground but always against a fence and among the vegetation.

Je viens juste de trouver cette toile spectaculaire dans mon jardin, dans le sud-ouest de la France, au niveau du sol, parmi les herbes et les feuilles mortes.
On peut voir l’entrée circulaire du labyrinthe de tunnels. L’araignée de 18 mm de longueur attend ses proies en retrait à l’intérieur de cette construction tubulaire, et bondit pour capturer sa victime prise dans ce grand piège.
Le cocon qui abrite les œufs est caché au milieu de la toile épaisse.
Cette toile élaborée donne son nom à l’espèce.

Cette araignée est à nouveau dans mon jardin cette année, mais cette fois, la toile est plus haute, à environ un mètre au-dessus du sol mais toujours contre une clôture et dans la végétation.
