BLACK VEINED WHITE - APORIA CRATAEGI - GAZE

Black-veined White is a large butterfly which wings look like parchment. We can see conspicuous black veins running across wings. Its wingspan is of 55 to 68 cm.

It lives in cultivated areas, forest edges or hedgerows. This species is found in Europe, from Scandinavia to Turkey and Middle East, through Asia to Japan, and also in North Africa.
They are in decline in many parts of Europe.

Black-veined White feeds on both wild and cultivated fruits.
It is a pest for the orchards in some parts of its range.

Female lays numerous eggs (100 to 200) on the underside of leaves on foodplants.
Eggs need 2 to 3 weeks to hatch.
