I live just outside of Pike Lake on the river and have several beaver ponds outside my house. We have quite a few birds on the pond that I was wondering of you could help me identify. They are smaller than the mallards and the female is mottled brown with a slightly darker solid colored head and the male has grey blue sides, white belly, and a two tone head that almost looks dark blue and burgandy. His back is mottled brown and there is a stripe of white in front of his wing. You can also see white underneath his tail. They were all in pairs feeding near the edges of the pond with some Willets. They were seen April 20/08. Hopefully this is enough info to help you id the bird for me. Thanks!

Nick: this is a big step up. You need to have that variety readily available. At a glance, you (and all the rest of us) will know exactly what needs to be done or done again. You have a much better photo of a red crossbill -- one that you took dowen at Forsberg's farm. You are developing a wonderful collection. What fun the next few years are going to be. Frank
