Ta Prohm, Preah Khan and the Red Ant Catchers

Ta Prohm is a popular temple complex becuse of the amzing, surreal way in which the roots of giant ancient trees have intermingled with the ruins of ancient Angkor. It is a beautiful ruin, where nature's impact is both creative and destructive. It was built in the late twelth centuary by King Jayavarman VII.

Preah Khan was a university, monestary and shrine within the royal city of Nagarajayacri built by King Jayavarman VII at the end of the twelth centuary. the old library has round columns, unique in Khmer architecture, making it look more like something from ancient Greece than ancient Angkor.

In Cambodia the eggs of Red Ants are a delicacy. In the grounds of Preah Khan some kids were working all day to catch the ants and then process them, by banging them in a bucket of water, to seperate their eggs from their bodies. Constant bites by the little insects were a common occupational hazard. The eggs were then sold for a dollar a bag. I am told they taste a bit like milk - which is by the way a rare commodity in Cambodia leading to high calcium deficiency in the people's diet.
