The Bayon

The extrodinary, surreal Bayon temple was built in the late twelth century. It was intended to embrace all religions in the kingdom, including the Islamic Cham. But it was consecrated as a Buddhist temple. Then when the kingdom reverted to Hinduism the mighty Buddha in the middle was pulled down. 49 towers have over 200 huge faces of the Lokesvara, projecting the Buddha's consciousness to the cardinal directions.
