The Majesty of Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is, of course, the most famous and the most visited of all the temples in Angkor. It is also the bigest, not only in Angkor, but the biggest religious structure in the world. It is also widely regarded as one of the most magnificent buildings ever created.

It was consecrated in around 1150 AD to the Hindu god Vishnu. It is thought to have taken some 30 years to construct. It was thought to be primarily used by the king for the worship of the devaraja during his lifetime and became a mausoleum to him upon his death.

Surrounded by a 200 metre-wide moat, the complex is approx 1.5 km x 1.3km. As well as dazzling architecture the complex is full of outstanding carvings and reliefs, amny telling stories from the Hindu Mahabharata epic. There are more than 3000 carvings of Apsara (heavenly) dancers alone.

I spent a couple of hours there, but of course it was only enough to tease the taste buds. i will return soon to try and capture it more faithfully on film and digital.
