Tokina 500mm Mirror

Images taken to test a newly aquired but 2nd hand Tokina 500mm mirror lens. Overall I've found the lens acceptably sharp although due to the limited DOF it can be a struggle getting accurate focus on the correct area when using it with a DSLR with no manual focusing aids.

Just purchased a secondhand one on Ebay to go with my Nikon D3200, taken half a dozen pictures hand held in my garden, cant believe the results, exellent better than I had expected. Back in the 1960's i purchased a Sigma 600mm Mirror lens for my Pentax Spotmatic due to the size and weight could not realy take hand held pictures, this lens is very light and compact, I highly recomend it, made in Japan, it is well made, with a quality feel metal body

Sarah, I too have the D90. Just put the Tokina on and shoot away. You do need lots of light though.

Hey! I googled "Tokina 500mm" and came agross your page. I'm a new DSLR owner with a Nikon D90 and wanted to use the Tokina 500mm that someone had given me. I'm not sure how to go about adapting the lens to my camera. Any suggestions? Thanks

The issue of the lens hood cover is the result of the course thread used. To overcome the problem gentleness is the answer. Almost like the Excaliber sword, it needs to be pulled softly instead of with force. Its an ongoing problem. In fact I keep the hood of my lens permanently in the forward position. I hope you have sorted yours out. It is an excellent lens and the round background highlights, softly out of focus has a most pleasing effect in wild life photos.

Hi everybody, Sorry to contact you about a technical problem. I just bought one one of these Tokinas. The hood is stuck in the reversed position on the lens and I don't want to force anything. Can you please help me out and tell me if the hood is just positionned like this or if it is screwed on in the reversed position? Thanks a lot for your time and input.

I've also owned one of these Tokina 500mm reflex lenses. It is plenty sharp but I've only gotten good results when using a tripod & cable release, and either good light or a fairly still subject. No doubt it would help to use high speed film but I like my Velvia 100. It is not going to compare favorably with a conventional 500-600mm in contrast and DOF but at least it can be carried with you on vacation! Still, I must add that after failures with this lens trying to get some elusive birds I wish I was carrying that 600mm conventional lens anyway, never mind the weight.

I also own a Tokina 500 mm mirror lens. It is fun to use and is light weight not requiring a monster tripod. DOF is shallow. The lens came with a rear filter kit and wrench for removing them. They are ND filters! I’ve never used them as I like to use low ISO setting and the lens starts at F/8. Try it extension tubes for macros at a distance.
