Zeeland is the region where I was born and lived most of my life. Zeeland was one of the founding members of the Dutch Republic in the 16th century and is now a Dutch province. The name Zeeland (Sealand in english) comes from the time when most of the area was islands surrounded by the sea. In more recent times most of the islands where connected, but there is still lots of open water and most of the land area is below sea level. Just in case you wondered: New Zealand was named after Zeeland. At that time there was already a 'New Holland' (historic name for Australia), so the new territory discovered by Abel Tasman was named after the powerful state of Zeeland.
