Vagabondism in Photography

An exploration of the form. Photography shows us what was there. Painting shows us what the artist felt about what was there. My goal is to meld the two with the revival of Impressionism. I am not so concerned about the clear cut line between subject and ground but the juxtaposition of color with complementary color simulating the actual reflected light, and the melding of each to a synthesis of emotional impact. If the term Impressionism offends, call what I do "vagabondism" and leave it at that. BTW, the pictures are displayed in reverse order of hits, the most visited are on the bottom of the gallery. yes, I like it, I vote. The result and the idea behind. Altought we might discuss on whether photography shows "what it is", "what it is not", "what it is as seen by the photographer" rather than "what was there", but I see the point in what you say. alem

I personally don't care if a photo is shopped or not. If the end result is a beautiful image, it's art. The detractors posting here seem more upset by the popularity of your work than the end result. Some artists are compelled to push at boundries and I for one am thankful for that. Where would we be if the impressionists caved in to early critics of the style? I can't imagine a world without Vincent or Monet. Keep pushing boundries Ellsworth, and keep the critics in perspective. Your unique view of photography is refreshing. Voted

Accidentally stumbling on this gallery, I read the comments below. Although I am a novice in photography, I know a bit about art and appreciation. "Impressionism" as referred by the likes of Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Cezanne is simply rendering their own interpretations of real scenes in a common form or effect of light and color. Agreed this is not "Impressionism" as it was in the 17th or 18th century, alas we are in 2005. Technology along with the constant need for art and beauty evolves in many forms. So "Sophistical" unless you own the exclusive right to express yourself, chill out and enjoy what others create. Smile more and maybe go have a Coke :)

It always disgusts me that people take offense at the success of non-formulaic photos on here. Just because a portrait has a truck in the background (for example) does not render that photo necessarily ordinary. There seems to be a tendency to demand contrived scenes or utterly extraordinary content for a photograph to be considered remarkable. All good portraits are on spotless white or black backgrounds. Every still life must use stark unidirectional light. If Monet or Renoir were alive today and posted their work on PBase accompanied by a short explanation of their philosophy they too would be called pretentious by someone. I mean, gosh, every photo I've ever seen by an impressionist looked like a snapshot! Oh the agony. A photograph that looks like it might have been taken in ordinary life. Congratulations Ellsworth for getting impressionism so right.

I agree completely with Sophistical and I AM prepared to sign my comment. Your heavy reliance on PS filters does conceal the ordinaryness of the photographs in my opinion. To describe them as 'impressionist' is just hollow self indulgence.

I could've said that your reasonings are hollow and pretentious, but I did not, in hopes that you would not retaliate...... but you did, which means you do recognize that your reasons and, attempts, to make your photos seem more than they really are, as exactly as I said: SOPHISTICAL.

I will allow that comment to stay. I think we all need to look at what we do and think hard at what we are about. I might be tempted to engage that criticsm in a deeper mode if the author had but signed the comment. How odd; even visitors may sign with their email addresses if they truly have the courage of their convictions. This one seemed not to. My un-Photoshopped works are fine, thank you, but that is not what I am doing here. And as the psychologists would say, "Thank you for sharing."

I suppose using Photoshop to make photos is a legit way of making photos look better..... But I wouldn't call it impressionism though - it's something else. It's more along the lines of "since the original photos is average, we can make something more out of processing it digitally in a computer," if you can call that process "a synthesis of emotional impact." It's a simulation alright, but it's not impressionism. I think you're missing the point of impressionism in paintings. I would prefer you to call it "digital falsification through contrived appearances." If you can give that a one-word "-ism" you'd be my hero.
