The Basilica of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, across the street from the Asheville Civic Center. The church was designed and built in 1909 by Rafael Guastavino, a Spanich architect and builder who had worked on the Biltmore Estate. Guastavino's other well known works include Grant's Tomb, the Great Hall at Ellis Island, Grand Central Station, Carnegie Hall, the Duke Chapel in Durham, the Motley Memorial in Chapel Hill, and the chapel at West Point.
