The delightful ancient town of Alcochete whose foundations date back to the 7th century, is located on the south bank of the River Tagus, near the Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve. In centuries gone by, Alcochete was an important royal retreat, with both João I and João II spending long periods of rest and relaxation there.

Looking through the enchanting photos of Alcochete reminds me of the few days I spent at the local Hotel Alfoz in the spring of 2005 with an international group of human rights activits...I hear that the good old Vasco da Gama noted in his diary in 1497 while on his way voyage of discovery to India the striking resemplance of Alcochete with our tourist town of Malindi on the Kenyan coast! I cannot agree more! Malindi with its whitewashed buildings and palm trees does indeed have some similarities with Alcochete.
