With a privileged situation at the mouth of river Tejo and a mild climate, Lisbon was populated
in very early times, and visited by many traders travelling to Great Britain among others the fenicians.
The city called Olisipo fell at the hands of the romans in 205 B.C. and they renamed
it Felicitas Julia Olisipo, and the population was called roman citizens.
The romans stayed until 419 aD when it was taken by barbarians,godos, sueves and visigodos that
stayed for 2 and a half centuries. Olisipo changed to Olissibona.
In 711 Olissibona fall in muslim hands.
The name changes again to Aschbouna, and the visigotic temple changes into a mosque.
Meanwhile the kingdom of Portugal was established in 1140 and on October 24, 1147 after a
12 weeks siege and the help of European crusaders the first king of Portugal takes the city from the hands of the arabs.
Several changes in the Latin word Olisipo brought the name to the actual - LISBOA
