Viana do Castelo is situated in the northwest border of Portugal that confines with Galicia in Spain and is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean.
Its beaches are sandy and have great conditions for surfing.
In August - every year - Viana do Castelo celebrates the festivities in honor of
the Virgin Mary called - Nossa Senhora da Agonia - it is in fact an image of the Virgin Mary in Agony for the death of her son Jesus (pietá).
The festivities include a religious procession in land another in the sea where boats go out to the sea with the Lady's image.
The feasts take place in August near the 20 of August (the city holiday) and include the nearest weekend - besides the religious side the feasts include folklore fireworks and an historical/etnographic parade - the subject of these photos.
