Phan Thiet, Vietnam

Phan Thiet is a fishing village east of Ho Chi Minh City. The old quarter is dilapadated as the Nuoc Mam (fermented fish sauce) factory has moved to the outskirts of town.

This is such an interesting old town. While taking pictures of the boy trimming the basket boat, I wandered over to the women knotting fishing nets in the pagoda courtyard. The local men urged a friend and I to come into the pagoda and there (I cannot make this up) displayed on a low table was the skeleton of a 30+ foot WHALE. They told us that over a hundred years ago this whale and the other 2 skeletons were brought in by the villagers and have been cared for ever since. -Amanda O'Neil

Thank you so much for the wonderful shots of Phan Thiet, which is many times more than a fishing village. :) 30+ years ago, it had four movie theaters in town, showing many international movies a week.
