The red areas of the male pheasant's head enlarge during the breeding season. It's a characteristic of the differences in the sexes.

We have a male visitor as shown in the picture with all those georgeous colors but it seems like his tail is now missing. Sure that he had one when he first came into our back yard. Is this possible? Tks for your input.

I live in Reno, Nevada. I have had a visitor pheasant in my back yard for the past two months (am and pm. I believe my bird feeder drew him here. He.she is quite magnificent and noisy but fun.
