In Hobart, currently every two years, the Wooden Boat Festival. Hobart is a deep-water port, its European history based on port transport and boats. One of the events was something I had great difficulty actually seeing the majority of: the 'Quick and Dirty'race. I was behind a wall of backs and hats, listening to descriptions of one boat starting out and whipping around the course in short order - maybe a couple of minutes, while the rest lingered on, a lot swimming to the finish line dragging their boats. I understand that school students were given materials, had to construct a boat in a limited time, and paddle it around a couple of buoys in the internal dock area. Rules seem to have been loose, as I heard hoots and hollers and discussion of whether actions taken by one team were within the rules. It was decided that since there were few rules, it had been acceptable - but I think they did something to scupper an opposing team's boat. All students wore helmets and life vests.
