Dunalley

Southern Tasmania: a small town where the canal cuts through the isthmus which forms the Forestier Peninsula. The Forestier Peninsula then links to the Tasman Peninsula which is a beautiful area of spectacular sea cliffs and sheltered bays, but it is very dangerous in bad weather. The canal allows small fishing boats to get from the east coast fisheries into Storm Bay, which leads up to the capital of Hobart, in much greater safety. Dunalley itself is an unspectacular town, although a few years ago it was largely destroyed by bush-fires and is doing well to actually still exist and to rebuild. It has a great café for fish and chips, and while were there, we watched a seal feeding at the entrance to the canal. it seems he/she only has one eye and so makes use of the hospitality of the unwanted cuts of fish from the shop. Further round the coast, seals are not exactly well-regarded by fisherment, since they rip nets. They are officially protected, and unofficially vilified and occasionally shot.
