The Females are watching.

For some reason, I always believed that the females had no real choice as to which stallion she might belong to. This summer taught me that this may not be always the case. In this image the stallions are battling it out as the mares quietly watch.

Note also that the gold stallion is missing his left ear. It was ripped off in a very bloody fight almost two years ago as he came of fighting age, and took on more than he could handle. He won two mares and lost them in just two days, going away with some significant injuries, one less ear and very damaged confidence. It took that long for him to come back.

Battle scars are a closer look into & upon lives of people & horses. The roads we travel the paths we take & the ponds we drink from & the caliber of our decisions & lines we've drawn &are told in our scars.

Is it common for stallions to collect mares in a horse harem?

It's amazing it healed so cleanly out in the wild. Fantastic shot!

Too bad about the ear...That happened with my two mares fighting over dominance. Fortunately I was able to sew her up.
