Big Red, another gash.

There have been questions about the appearance of a wound on the sorrel stallion I call Big Red.

If you look at this image of Red, you can clearly see the very ugly deep wound on his chest. He sustained the gash in a fight to keep a mare (See the photo titled "Battle of the Reds"). The younger stallion defeated the older stallion and inflicted the wound shown here.

Just a year ago, Big Red was ripped open with a vicious bite from another stallion. At that time he lost his entire harem of mares; the injury made him incapable of defending them. He then lived a solitary existence while he healed and was ready for a comeback. Sadly, his comeback won only a single mare that he lost after only about three months. And again, he has an even more debilitating wound.

This image was taken just over two weeks ago. I have been out to see the mustangs twice since then, searching the desert all day each time. Big Red is nowhere. I fear the worst for him. He may be gone.

To survive today, and fight to father the young born next year is the single most powerful instinct that drives the life of the stallion. Sometimes not so pretty, but always real.

I too have been photographing this herd for about 7 years. There are many familiar faces and locations. Today (7/28/14) the BLM began a gather of 140 horses in the Bible Springs Complex…sad they can't live like other wild animals.

Hi there. I think your pictures are truely wonderful and I could spend hours looking at them. Your very lucky to have seen such amazing things and I hope one day I get the chance to experience this sights as well. I just wondered if there was any sightings of Red yet? I'd hate for him to have had his last day and I'm hoping that you've seen him since. My fingers are crossed for him.

Thanks for the update on his wounds. That is a nasty gash. I hope you see him soon and he's ok. The stallions of this herd seem to be a rowdy bunch. Amazing pictures you get of them! I follow blogs on Spring Creek Basin, Little Book Cliffs and Pryer Mtn herds too. I only recently discovered your beautiful horses here and I enjoy your pics and remarks very much. You do a great job and I hope you can continue to see them often. I like when you date the pics. Thanks for documenting and sharing!
