High Riders

The day was very hot. The desert birds flew up to the highest point they could find to spread their wings a cool off in the hot summer breeze. They reminded me of overheated dogs, with their mouths to pant and release the heat. They were a minor annoyance to the wild horses as long as they perched on the flat area of the back, riding up along the mane or back toward the tail would cause the host to flip them off.
