This is the last image I have of the Old red stallion with his favorite mare, Flo. He lost her in a duel with (strangely) two younger stallions. Red now is an outcast and stays adrift alone in the desert. The mare Flo and her 18-month colt runs with the two young stallions that won her.
Both of the horses pictured here were rounded up several years ago and then released by the BLM. You can see on their necks the BLM freeze brand. The code in the brand indicates that the red was born in 2000 and the mare in 2003.
Note the dried flap of flesh hanging from the neck of the red stallion. A wound that played a role in his losing the mare. It became infected and may have made him sick. The wound has turned to a large scar and he is doing well. I expect he will return to reclaim his mare.
