The stallions have a well-defined "tough guy" social order. The lesser stallion will always back away from a confrontation similar to the one in this image. When a lower male feels confident enough to take on a higher ranking stallion, a fight will most likely occur, and when one of the combatants can hurt the other, he will retain or gain rank. Of course, higher rank means a male earns the right to keep one or many mares.
