Once the successful stallion has earned the rank of a breeding stallion with a harem of mares, most of his time and energy is spent chasing away the young bachelor males that want to take his place.

Unlike the familiar breeding season, or "rut", of American elk and other large western wildlife, wild horses have no seasonal time of year when they compete for the favor of females. The competition is fierce and constant, all year long.
