Too Many Wild Horses?

Tonight on the evening news, there was a story about how the BLM may be thinking of eliminating up to half of the the wild horses that roam in the Western United States. Wild horse adoptions have become less popular and the BLM is unable to continue keeping horses that are unwanted and un-adoptable. It is the real possibilty that the horses may have to be disposed of in a way that will enrage the wild horse loving public.

Ironically, I was out in the desert getting photos of the mustangs today, even as the report that aired this evening was being put together. I shot this photo just before to drove the 100-plus miles home, and then walked in to watch the late news with the report about the wild hors

It's 2013 now, and The National Academy of Sciences has finished a report on the science (or lack of) used by the BLM to create management policies. Long story short, The BLM needs to take a long, hard look at it's flawed practices regarding wild horse management. The BLM has a lot of hard working people doing the best they can with an impossible job...but justice in the natural world is not being served by these ill-conceived round-ups!

If you ask me, there aren't enough. What gives the BLM the ultimate knowledge of how many wild horses the western USA can handle? If history is ever studied, nature will take care of its own.
