Sometimes known as the 'Victory Division'.
The Hawaiian heritage of this division and its sister division, the 25th, is shown by the taro leaf on the shoulder patch.
On December 7, 1941 the division was headquartered at Scoffield Barracks, thus experienced the attack on Pearl Harbor, making it the first army division to fight in the Pacific region of WWII.
When the North Koreans attacked South Korea in June 1950, a contingent of the 24th was sent from Japan to meet the enemy and thus were the first in combat for the Korean War.
I joined the 24th in Japan in the spring of 1953 where it was being readied to return to Korea to force the issue after years of stalemated truce negotiation.
We returned to Korea about one month before the truce was signed on July 27, 1953.
