Taktsang Lhakhang - Tiger's Nest - high up on a sheer rockface

Taktsang is one of the most venerated pilgrim sites in the Himalayan world. It is believed that in the 8th century Guru Rinpoche meditated for three months in a cave at Taktsang and converted the Paro Valley to Buddhism. The sanctuary built on the site dates back to the 14th century.
Taktsang Lhakhang serves as a monastery.

Taktsang Lhakhang is located 2950m - 9678 ft - above sea level. The climb from the Paro valley is 800m - 2600 ft - and it is a very steep and at times narrow path. The monks that live in the Taktsang monastery travel this path on foot and together with pack horses obtain all supplies from the valley below.
