Rawatbhata

In 1968, when I lived near there, Rawatbhata was a tiny village with three dirt streets and maybe 500 people. Due to the nearby atomic power station, it has now grown to a population of over 50,000. One thing that hasn't changed is how incredibly friendly the people are.

i have been in Rawatbhata in 19sixties when there was nothing there . my father B K Mehra had been a part of the dams from its inception and i would visit the scenic place from Kota every weekend. i have watched the colonies at the damsite and Atomic power projects coming up ..... making sandcastle on the riverbanks, crossing short distances on country boats, soaking in Chambal waters at Chulia falls, baroli temple ruins.....so many memories and such beautiful ones.

I had lived in Rawatbhata all through the seventies and left in the early eighties. Whenever I think of that place, the colour grey comes to my mind. Doors, windows, school uniforms, department buses and other vehicles, all were bathed in grey. Don't know whether it has changed now, though my bet is that it still hasn't. On the contrary, life there was anything but grey. It was quite colourful and I have got many fond memories. I grew up there and learnt to ride a cycle, swim, climb trees... all from there only. There was so much of open space to run around and play. The visits to the nearby forests, Baroli temple, RPS dam... everything seems still fresh in my mind. Back then life used to move in slow pace. People were very warm - everyone seemed to knew everyone. Nothing ever remained a secret in this industrial township. A rumoured love affair, somone getting caught while copying in exams, some theft or other criminal activity ... these kind of news used to spread with lightning speed. For us kids every grownup person was 'uncleji' or 'auntiji'. It was like one big family. Almost every festival, be it Diwali, Holi, Christmas, Guru Nanak Jayanthi, Durga Puja, Ganesh Chaturthi ... (you name it) used to get celebrated with great fervour and harmony in our colony. Still remember going to school as early as 7.30 am, even during winter months. Each class was a mini-India with students hailing from different parts of the country. (In fact, that is what I badly missed after leaving Rawatbhata). Afternoons were spent finishing loads of homework and evenings with friends either playing football or cricket or lounging at the pulia (culvert) and endless gossips. Unit tests and examinations were tense affairs and every year, the day the final exams got over we used to hit the lone movie theatre - Lakshmi talkies - with gusto, never mind whatever movie was being screened. Almost all my classmates used to show up there on that day and the mood often used to get quite boisterous with catcalls and 'ceetees'. The ticket cost (if I remember correctly) was a princely sum of Rs 2.50. Another source of visual entertainment was open air screening of movies. They started off with a 16 mm projector and later on graduated to a 35 mm projector mounted on a van. Most of the movies screened used to be of Meena Kumari, Raj Kapoor era (I mean old even by seventies standards) and screening glitches like poor print quality or frequent disruption of screening were quite common. Sometimes we even had to rush back home due to a heavy downpour! Those were pre-TV days and cricket season meant sitting glued to radio and transistors and listening to audio commentaries. During lunch breaks at school the common query used to be 'score kya hua'. Those residing close to schools used to go home to update themselves about the latest scores and generously share it with others. I remember one Bengali gentleman (forgot his name) who used to be an avid cricket enthusiast and used to carry a pocket transistor with him whenever cricket test matches were on (no one-day or 20/20 tamashas back then). We used to tease him by shouting behind his back 'uncleji score kya hua' (when no cricket matches were happening) and scoot off to the nearest possible hiding place. Really, those were the days! But now, I guess a lot may have changed. Back then, there were only two reactors and now I am told there are 10 and the phase 2 colony has spread far and wide. We stayed in rawatbhata for 13 years. Now we are transferred to vizag. My kids had grown up there. They successfully entered to premier engineering colleges. They had grownup as confident and independent adults. The credit goes to rawatbhata. Finally getting a chance to visit RW this October after 28 years. Leaving US on 8th. All stages are a go. Planning to visit my home, school, Gurudwara, Mango Tree behind my house (hopefully its still there) and may be couple of other places I remember. I dont know anybody there, so I would welcome any suggestions regarding where to stay, and/or any places to visit. Plans are wide open right now. Might stay there a day.. or a week. Depends. Now a days i am in Jaipur itself working in MNC. I used to go RWT in every 3-4months, its good to see that RWT is growing and developing faster. But a sad news is that now a days you will not such friendly behavior as peoples used to have in earlier days.It is a place where no one stole a cycle, but now a days bank robbery, murder etc incidents used to happen there, so its my humble request to pray for the originality of the RWT as it was Years earlier. First of all I would like to thank a lot to M/s Peter and Jakie for creating the wonderful website which is enabling us to make contacts with all our childhood teachers and friends. I was in Rawatbhata since 1968 to 1980. Firstly I used to lived in C3A 87 Qtr just near to Phase-II Buststop and there was a large Board of State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur just near to that Bus stand. I still remember our school in HWP which was very beautiful and vast enough having a large playground on back side. I still remember our teachers Y.K Sharma sir(Maths) Gupta sir(chemistry), Vyas sir(Bio), Chabra sir(physic), G.L Taneja sir (History), M.K Sharma sir, Heranjal Sir and Dharmadhikari sir (music), Also remember our school mates Sunil Chopra, Sudha Chopra, Sarla Tiwari and many others. Some of my batchmates were Sunil Salvi, Rajkumar Assudani, Rohit Anand, Dharmesh Pandya, Mausami Banerjee, Manisha Deshmukh, Vandana Ghokhale, Seema Bharadwaj, Vikas Mathure, Sanjay Vyas. In late 70's we shifted to RPS colony in Qtr No. NTG-69. Their our neighborers were Mr. Chouhan, Mr. T.C. Malik, Mr B.K Soral, Mr S.P Gupta etc. I still remember the good time which I spent in Rawatbhata with all my teachers, friends classmates and neighbours. From Ravi Singh's account I was saddened to know that Phase II C3A colony was demolished. I used to live in C3A 46 (still remember the number) and later shifted to C2 20 and have very fond memories of the colony. Wonder whether the 'puliya' near the cooperative store survived all these changes. We had spent countless evenings of idle chit chats and gossip there. I left Rawatbhata in 1982 and am currently based in Bangalore. I am in touch with some of my old friends Sunil More, Vishal Mehta and Deepak Vyas. Hi Guys, Thanks to Peter and Jackie to make this available on net. I googled Rawatbhata and hit this site and for a time being, transported back to my childhood. I was born in 1968 in Rawatbhata, and I do remember Canadians coming up to Dhobiwala and Paras grocery store. They left in 74 after India exploded a nuclear device. Rawat bhata is one place where time has stood still. My wife jokes about antiquated golgappe wala, Paras wala , Suraj laudry wala and so on. That is true for rawatbhatian friendly spirit too. Always friendly and loving. I am pleasantly surprised to see posts from so many known persons. For those who don’t know me. I am Ravi Singh. studied in RAPS school from 1972-1985 (yes I did KG too-and I still remember Mrs. Fernandes and Mrs. Bhalla,-incidently I got whacked by Mrs. Bhalla for writing with left hand in KG).. I left Rawatbhata in 85, lived in Delhi till 2006 and moved to Orlando, US in 2006. I am in Orlando since then working for Siemens.. I remember my classmates -Ashwini Kohli, Nitin Sharma, Sanjeev Sharma, Neelesh Sule, Putan Singh, Victor Kutty, Thomas , Sunita Chaudhry, Nita Ojha, Ashok Gupta, Ajay Gupta,Ritu Johry, Ashok Dubey, Rakesh Panday, Mathur, Melvin Furtado, Anju Kumra, Prem Singh Solanki, Anup Pathak, Anil Singh, Lalchand Baresha, Pinaki Ranjan Das, Manish Sah (my competitor in academics always),Meena Shah, Ajay Chobey, Yogesh Seth.. Recently, I visited Rawatbhata in 09 and very sad to see the decrepit state of RPS colony and the dam,. The seven step garden near the dam had dried up and vanished. I also missed the antique golgappe wala, The Phase -II ( C3A ) colony was demolished tomake way for better housing. Finally something is changing,but as long as it is for good ..... Hi Everybody, I am Ashwini Kohli presently at Surat and at the moment quite shell shocked. Putaan Singh Tomar, Jospeh Thomas, Neeraj Kulshrestha , Nitin Sharma were my classmates. I was at the glorious RAPP E.M School from 1979-85 and went on do my Engg. from Aligarh later on. My Dad Mr.Navin Chandra Kohli, a Civil Engineer is one of the old hands of RawatBhata who landed there in 1963-64( when it was pretty much a jungle) , did one stint till 1973 and came back again via Narora & Kalpakkam in 1979 to be there till 1987. He retired from NPCIL in 1996 and lives with us at Surat. His "Rawatbhata Tales" of yore are still a delight to my children. I cherish my years at RawatBhata as the best of my life before I grew up to the vagaries of this world. Every body who lived there in those days including my indefatigable teacher Mrs Singh ,and my maths guru Y.K Sharma Sir, whose debt I may not ever be able to repay have a contribution in making my life a lot richer. Lastly but not the least I have not forgotten the antics of Lucky & Lovely and my trips to Saddle Dam with Aspan Singh Sidhu on my then new bicycle.

dear all, since long (1983 i passed out xii & left for college ), i have been waiting fr something like this. I spent 3 decades in Rbt 1966 - 2002 . longing to go there once again to relive some memories( till kota by train , station to gumanpura by auto / tempo enjoying some delicious snack at jodhpur sweet , then enjoying "mini-bus" ride back to rbt.) miss the Cycle trips with mates to submersb , chetak , baroli , bhainsrd grh , phase-1 , evening/mrng walks in summer to dam , garden , famous paani puri ( never tasted like that anywhere else same goes for samosa of gopal rest near school in HWP colony). we were really lucky to be taught by one of the best teachers of the world ( Y.K.Sharma sir for maths , Vatsa sir for Eng , Chhabda sir , Gupta sir & others) it is great to see the photo of sharma sir. In fact we 9 from 1983 batch celebrated 31/12 of 2006 together at surat ( anirudh apte , satish george , ajju , piyush mathur ,akash shrivastav , acchu , rajnikant ,ashu). pawan ,remember our evenings at manav mandir ground.can never forget the best place on the globe which has everything to offer ( mountains / river / dams / best hospital /best shopping centers in 1980's ,excellent n well kept colonys n good transport facility & most important excellent citizens caring for each other) thank you very much peter n jackie for this platform. It is really a matter of great proud to see Rawatbhata of 1968 and to just fresh our memories of that time. In fact I also joined RAPS during Feb. 1968 when I was only of 22 years old. Hi everyone... I have been longing to visit Rawatbhata for a long time (lets say 20 odd years) since I left that place cuz my dad moved. I have lost touch with almost everybody (primarily cuz I was 10 when i left RB). Anyways, I would like to visit there but not stay in hotel etc. Would very much like to stay with some family who has been there for some time and know there way around (may be as a paying guest).. max 1 week. May be if someone can spare some time to show me around... I am currently in US and would be able to give 4-6 months advance notice before visiting. Needless to say it would be huge favor. OMG... Cant believe my eyes when I saw this site. Thanks to Peter and Jackie for making this happen. I will be visiting India next month (Oct) and was hoping if I can visit RW for couple of days so started googling. Thats when I came across this site... It was truly awesome. My dad S. Prem Singh used to work at RAPP. I had the good fortune of spending my childhood (first 9 years) from 1971-80 at RW then we moved to Amritsar then to Qatar and been in US for last 15 years. Though its been a while, I have very fond memories and some of them etched so deep that I sometimes dream about being there. ... I vividly remember C3A/94, Gurudwara, Hanuman Temple across the cricket grounds, walking to school... the school prayers in the morning, HOLI/DIWALI/HOLA... friends/acquaintance I remember... Pankaj Jain (and his two brothers), Pinku/Priti/ Ms Chawla (teacher, but i forget of which subject), Vandana, Vyas family... most of all that "PIYAU" where this old man used to offer water for free ... Reminds me of the ghazal... "Yeh daulat bhi lelo..." ... I can go on n on for prob another few hours... :) ... Anyways.. if I make it there... I will bring lots of pictures and post em... Had been to this place, I mean hell, for some 5 years. It was the most bitter experience I had in my life. After a lot of efforts I am able to come out of this hell.
