"Naked Ladies"

St. Helena, Napa Co., California

[...are you disappointed?]

Earlier settlers planted these Amaryllis, also called Pink Lady. The clump of long,
slender, glossy dark-green leaves that comes in the early springtime dies to a dry pillow;
up through that come the waxy-looking, surreal flower buds...
up and up they reach, a dozen or more stalks together, a foot high and more,
and then--amazing glory--huge, pink blossoms sway for days in the late summer breezes.
