Sarcodes sanguinea, Snow Plant

Lassen Volcanic National Park, California

In the family Monotropaceae, a subfamily of Ericaceae, the Snow Plant associates with the roots of the pine trees, and is among the first plants to put up its annual stalk after the snow recedes. We caught them just coming up.
