Stourhead Autumn

Stourhead House and Gardens is a National Trust property in Wiltshire, just 2 miles off the A303, to the east of Wincanton. It's a fabulous place to visit, particularly in the spring and autumn when the colours are at their very best. My wife and I often take a trip up there on our day off and never tire of walking around the beautiful lake, with its abundance of trees and flowering shrubs.

I hope you enjoy looking at these images. The first batch of images were taken on a relatively dull day in October 2003, with my old Fuji S602Z. The second group were taken with my Nikon D80 and new 18-200 VR lens on a reasonably bright Saturday afternoon in October 2007. And the third batch were taken on my D300.

The bridge and temple picture is magnificent. The landscaping equals the best of large scale Japanese landscaping, such as Rikugien, yet it dates back to a time when (I presume) the Japanese and English cultures were virtually unknown to each other. The temple's classical design seems to have been adopted in much of the best of American architecture too. It reminds me of, for example, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello.

You really captured the essence of the place. I think Stourhead is one of the most beautiful gardens I have visited especially in Autumn.
