The Flags of the Celebration

Paro, Bhutan

Bhutan is in a very festive mood with the 100-year anniversary of the
kingdom and the coronation of their fifth king, Jigme Khesar Namgyal
Wangchuck. The orange/red flags are the national flags and the white
flags honor the 100-year anniversary and the coronation.

The 100-year anniversary was actually last year but celebrated now since
2007 was not an auspicious year as decreed by the royal astrologer.
All life in Bhutan is governed by their Buddhist faith and details such
as schedules are often decreed by astrology.

The 28-year old new king is following his father's drive to democracy in
Bhutan and faces many problems as he guides his country into the modern
world. Time will tell if the new bachelor king follows his father's lead
in having 4 wives (who are all sisters).
