The Vikings created the first major Icelandic settlements near the current capital of Reykjavík
in the year 874 and by the year 930, most of the arable land in the country had been claimed
by the Norsemen and their Irish slaves; some say the name "Iceland" was selected to
discourage others from moving there. Today, Iceland is an independent republic with
close ties to Denmark and the other Nordic countries and it's also a great place to visit.
