Windstorm & Fire in Roanoke, VA Feb. 10th, 2008

On February 10th, 2008, Roanoke, Virginia had one of the worst wind storms I can ever remember in my life. There was a Red Alert for fires which meant the atmosphere and the wind came together to make perfect setup for fires and there were many that day and for the next 4-5 days. Over that time there was over 45,000 people without electricity and I was one of them. For 3 days with wind chills in the single digits we had no electricity and had to stay with my oldest daughter.

These pictures are my attempt at one of the fires on the 10th in Roanoke. It got dark on me, I had no tripod and with my camera shake they aren't the best but I hope you can get some idea at how bad this one was and it spread over the mountains for the next 3 days, leaving behind a trail of charred forest floors and the trees still standing.

I will be adding more galleries from the next 4 days as I got as close to the fires and where they were already distinguished as I possibly could. I went down dirt roads with the woods on either side of me still smoldering and found the fire departments remote headquarters and took as many photos as I could. These pictures are just the first day, that Sunday night. I hope you can see a little bit of what we faced.
