Two sailors painting aboard the USS Hugh Purvis DD 709

Near Bermuda

The men in the deck gang had a hard life. The paint back in 1962 was lead based, eack day these guys had been exposed to a lot of this paint. These two guys carried rags that were used to wipe off the paint coming down from their hands.

This image was made on the Project Mercury Cruise. The ship was being touched up before going in to Bermuda for a break.

Anyone out there that served on the Hugh Purvis around 1963-1967 and remembers Charles Robert Douglas who passed away in 2003 let me know as I am his son in law and want to put together some information and pictures of Charles' Navy career for his four young grandsons. Thank you, Duane Jarvis Newaygo, MI
