White Fairy Tern (Manu-o-ku)

These photos were taken while in Oahu, Hawaii. The bird, White Fairy Tern or (Manu-o-ku), is on the endangered species list in Hawaii. It is a very interesting bird. When it is egg laying time, no nest is constructed. A single egg is laid wherever a suitable depression is found. Most nests are on tree branches, buildings, or other man-made structures, rock ledges, or on the ground. A ring of black feathers surrounds each dark blue eye which gives the bird a wide-eyed serene look that is really beautiful. Also note the large size claws on the recently hatched young tern. This enables it to successfully secure itself on the tree branch where the egg was laid. It is a very interesting and beautiful bird.
