Chaco Culture National Historic Park - Northwest New Mexico
Visited the Chaco Canyon (2008) in the northwest corner of New Mexico where the Chaco Culture National Historic Park is located. Chaco canyon lies near the center of the San Juan Basin of New Mexico, which is near the southeastern edge of the much larger Colorado Plateau. Between 900 and 1150 A.D., the Anasazi of the Chaco Canyon region built fourteen monumental pueblo "Great Houses", huge, formal, multi-storied structures with 100 to 650 rooms in each. Many great kivas, small pueblo houses and other structures were also built.
The “Great Houses” that we visited were, Hungo Pavi, Chetro Ketl, and Pueblo Bonito.
It's a tough drive to the canyon, the last 15 miles to Chaco is on a bumpy dirt road that can be quite a hazard if it rains on the day you visit the Park.
