On June 14th, 2008, a small flotilla of 16 canoeists and kayakers joined Scott Andrews on his annual DOG FREE leisurely paddle on the Saco River. The day was warm and slightly overcast at times, making for a comfortable day out on the water. Boaters launched at the Route 302 Bridge, paddled approximatley 8 miles, and pulled out at the Brownfield Bridge on Route 160. Several detours were made for lunch/swimming breaks and to Pleasant and Lovewell ponds, where boaters took in some great scenery and caught glimpses of painted turtles and numerous birds (including loons and a pair of nesting eastern kindbirds). An immature bald eagle was seen directly along the banks of the Saco, undisturbed by passing kayakers. The event was followed by an ice cream outing in nearby Bridgton.
