Diyarbakir is a predominantly Kurdish city in southeast Turkey with a history stretching back 5000 years. The old city is surrounded by a set of Roman walls made of basalt. Many other buildings have attractive black and white blocks made from basalt and limestone layers. There are many ancient buildings including both mosques and Syrian churches.
I travelled to Diyarbakir in 2003 and 2005 to work and had a chance to meet many local people.
