Guarded by High Fences & Barbed Wire

The National Gas Turbine Establishment (NGTE Pyestock) in Fleet, part of the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE), was the prime site in the UK for design and development of gas turbine and jet engines.
It was created by merging the design teams of Frank Whittle's Power Jets and the RAE turbine development team.

The largest test cell on site, Cell 4 was built in 1965, at a cost of 6.5 million, as part of the Concorde programme but also to test other supersonic jet engines.
The test cell, unique in the world, takes up most of the steel clad structure with its mass of pipes, blast doors and electronics.
It is connected to the Air House by blue pipes and was designed to simulate Concorde's flying conditions - Mach 2 (1522 mph) at 61,000 feet, but could test Concorde's engines at a maximum wind speed of 2,000 mph.

This historic site is to be destroyed and become a business park.....

And what's the betting that when they destroy this piece of history, and build yet another business park, they will destroy this leafy glade too, and 'put up a parking lot' :-{

Great shot and love the light through those trees.

A really intriguing place, great shot through the trees...pity they couldn't make it a type of historical site...V

Sounds like SSTs will not make a comeback in the near future. When they do the 'planners' will have to put up another test establishment. V

Nicely lit forest scene, your explanation just broadened my mind, thanks. V

Oh yes, the view beyond the trees isn't so great. But the trees and the rest of the foreground are beautiful

Great view through the woods of this historic place. v

Above all I like the trees and the dappled shade ... but then I'm happy with nature.

Pity it can't become a museum to remember when we used to lead the world in jet technology...... now we only lead the world in shopping.

Excellent and informative image. What a pity it's soon to be replaced with, of all things, a business park. V.

It has always amazed me what the West developed in response to "Cold War" years. I'd rather it be transformed into a nature park as opposed to business park.

A compelling image and story ~V~

I'm with Linda: we treat our heritage (especially industrial and scientific) disdainfully in this country.... Great view, though....

Love your point of view here... as if nature is missing another chance to claim that land again. V

And the beat goes on.... Sorry to see this historic site become a distant memory.... V

Hmm - we used to live a short distance from here. History seems to be something the planners don't care about one jot. Can't you just see them sitting around in the council chambers saying "what we really need is a new Sainsbury's or Tesco, or B&Q". They've got no idea.
