Gallery - Color, Light & Gesture - Jay Maisel - 2004

The New York City photography Jay Maisel led this wonderful workshop. He was honest in his critiques, while at the same time showing upmost respect for our work. Part of the reason I went to this workshop was in a effort to understand "gesture." I now know that it means the aspect of an image that gives it meaning. It can be an actual gesture, or it can be the content of the image. I have separated these images into three galleries - Color, Light, Gesture - in the discipline of trying to analyze what is the major aspect of the image. Jay also said that most good images, or course, has aspects of all three elements.

Very nice collection of work. I also had the privilege of taking Jay's workshop this past February, and I would say that quite a few of your images successfully incorporate what he was teaching.

You can plainly see that Jay has given you many insights into your purpose as a photographer. His trinity of color, light and gesture is one good way of helping you codify principles of visual expression into a usable matrix. Very much as I teach my students how to integrate abstraction, incongruity and human values to make a substantive point. Every teacher has their own way of making the infinite choices available to us as photographers accessible.
