Singapore, September 2007

One of the things that impressed me about Singapore was the public art. I couldn't resist this juxtaposition.

From a local point of view, the sign quite accurately describes the situation of the statue's origins. The man represents our forefathers who came from places like China, Europe, India etc. They came by boat and landed where the statues are. Mostly merchants and coolies, some went back whilst others stayed behind, looking and hoping to find a new life of possibilities.
Excellent way to 'slogan' our city using an image.

You are masterful at juxtaposing words and gestures that together say something different than what originally was intended. The sign is pure civic boosterism, while the statue is a person deeply in need.
Irony is your middle name, Tim.
