Susan is right. This view is looking straight south. The lights in the distance are light domes from St. Joseph, Cameron, and other towns in the distance. That's how much light pollution is affecting our night sky. The bright light near center is a street light.

This picture looks wrong to me somehow. Maybe that's not the sun setting? When I lived in Iowa and could actually see the nighttime sky I recall the Milky Way running mainly north and south - not east and west as this picture would seem. Now I live near St. Louis and the Milky Way is just a memory! Thanks for all your awesome pictures. I love this site!
