The Sino-Dutch Leonid expedition 2001.
Photographic observations of the outburst of the Leonid meteors during the crystal clear night 18/19 november 2001. The author observed this fenomenon as a member of the Sino Dutch Leonid Expedition 2001 from the optic observatory of Xinglong (150 km north east of Beijing), Hebei province, China. It was a expedition to gather scientific data on this years Leonid storm.
During this night the author had a Canon T70 with a 1.4/50 mm lens attached on a Vixen travelmount. The camera was aimed to a point in the sky and followed the stars on their movement through the sky. On the first pictures you see at the left corner the horizon. It disappeared when stars rise further above the horizon. On the right corner you see a group of stars: Preasepe (or object Messier 44) an open star cluster in the constellation of Cancer.
Each picture is named after the moment when the picture was taken, for example : 18_11_2001_1629 UT means that the picture was taken on 18 november 2001 at 16:29 Universal Time. Exposure time each picture 11m58s on Kodak Elite II (200 asa). Look at the pictures and see the numbers of meteors captured on a picture rising to the time of maximum around 18:00 UT. Then a decline sets in.
