Magnetic fields near sunspot 365 erupted on May 27th and 28th, sparking a series of X-class solar flares and hurling at least one coronal mass ejection (CME) toward Earth. Geomagnetic activity could intensify on May 29th or 30th when the cloud sweeps past our planet. Sunspot 365 remains a threat for Earth-directed explosions in the days ahead.

29 May 2003: another chance to observe the northern light from the Netherlands. I received a phonecall from Casper ter Kuile about the possibility of an aurora outbreak.
In this gallery you will find some pictures taken from the Groevenbeekse Heide (a moor) near Ermelo. Disadavantage of this location is the proximity of the village of Ermelo, which causes some light pollution in northern direction. Conditions where moderate. The sky was hazy at lower altitudes (~7 to 10 degrees). Limiting magnitude increashed at 5.8 to 6.3 during the observations. All observations were recorded using a mini-casette recorder and timings were made with a radio-controlled dcf clock with illuminated display. I also brought with me two Canon T-70 cameras, one equipped with a Canon FD 1.8/50mm and the other with a Canon FD 2.8/15 mm fisheye lens. Both were set up on heavy duty Manfrotto tripods. The Canon 2.8/15 mm fish eye lens I also used to take the pictures I made on the great aurora display of 6 april 2000.
