Chios, 016

On the road between Pyrgi and Vessa

The 'famous' mastic trees ( Pistacia Lentiscus L ). Although mastic trees are seen in more parts of the mediterian area, Chios is the only island where the mastic gum actual is produced. For that reason the island has always been prosperous. Mastic gum production needs special soil conditions, temperatures, skills and equipment. It's ingredients are being used as raw material for the production of chewing-gum, liqueur, tooth-paste, flavouring for ice-cream, and even for hot tiles of the space shuttle!
