Nikon D300

On November 2nd I have bought Nikon D300. I'm still exploring it's advantages over good ol' D200...
November 17th: Installed ACR 4.3 plug-in for Photoshop CS3. Finally able to properly read NEF's. Managed to do few different ACR calibrations on the very same day. Check here: https://pbase.com/miljenko/d300nefconvert Getting close to good colors...
November 21st: Installed Capture NX 1.3. Now I can compare the two. I really enjoy the camera...

Miljenko thanks for your samples. I think Lou is right about Nikon. I believe D300 is too much for almost nothing. They should just upgrate D200.

Lou, thanks a bunch for such brief but precise observations. I'd like to add one fact based on my tests dating back to D2x intro which confirms your views. Only two out of 8 (considered very good) lenses tested were able to provide enough resolution to get me full 12MP resolution readings. Obviously, 12MP is THE limit for today's mass production lenses when used on cropped sensors.

the resolution compare pics talk all about it. It was evident that reducing the pixelsize would lead to a resolution loss. On the other side a cmos will never be comparable to a ccd anyway. Canon has encountered the same problems with the 1DSmk3. Reducing the pixelsize brought just less good resolution, more noise, in some way a whorse camera then the one before. Obviously the industry is not close to handle that small pixelsizes when it comes to sharpness and noise, maybe another reason why Nikon has kept the D3 at 12 mpix on the full sized chip. Nikon had better made to put on the market a d200x. Adding the new af and liveview facility to the d200 had certainly made an unbeatable tool. A prove again that more recent will not absolutely bring you a better picture, despite of all the technical evolution.

Alain, Croatian Nikon distributor received two and I was lucky SOB to get one of those :)
Richard, bad weather (rain and temps below zero) doesn't allow to go outside these days. Most frustrating! Waiting for snow (forecasted for this week) and some action. Oh yeah, and waiting for my copy of Capture NX!

Congratulations! Now go outside and take some pix of moving targets. We're all keen to see how well the AF tracks :)
