Here is the clear evidence of advantageous diagonal resolution target orientation compared to traditional horizontal/vertical one. Resolution measurements started in the film era where emulsion particles are randomly scattered, target orientation didn't play any role in the measurement process. With digital cameras orientation has mayor influence on resolution results as the interference between recorded lines pattern and sensor geometrical pattern ends up with unreliable results. Banking the target by 45 degrees avoids any interference and gives consistent and exact results. These two samples are 200% crops from the same target shot (few inches apart at the central target area).
